When browsing through the Synology Package Manager today, I noticed a product called "Active Backup for G Suite". I had a closer look and this really looks interesting. It allows you to save contacts, calendars, mailboxes, and drives from Google to your on-premise NAS and restore if needed. They have a similar app for Office 365.
In my experience to date, most Synology apps, or NAS apps in general, just repackage some standard Linux tools into their own tool and give it a fancy GUI.
In this specific case, however, I could not find the tools to recreate the same functionality, at least not in any straightforward way. The tools Google provides have severe limitations, such as having to either export everything or nothing. I could not find any Google tool that would allow me to backup a single user's mailbox offline.
What I did find when googling for it is several other commercial providers that seem to have a similar offering. Which for me is usually an indication that there can't be that much magic behind all this.
Do you happen to know or have an educated idea what kind of technology they use to do this? I'm basically trying to understand if they really created a unique application speaking to G Suite using the API or if it's something a lot simpler than that and, of course, if I can easily recreate this on my own system.
