I would like all the gurus to guide me on this one . It's my first time building a server spec workstation , so please enlighten me if I have made mistakes.

Purpose

To build a workstation that can can be on 24/7 , opening more than 1xx tabs of chrome and still perform .

I program , develop web apps and mobile apps. So Virtualization is important , as I use docker ,android studio and virtualbox for other OS such as windows 10.

Occasionally , some light gaming if possible ( hopefully linux supports more games ) .

There are 2 LAN ports , so most probably will host another VM dedicated to openMediaVault and mount another 2TB HDD .

Inspired by - Remote Linux Workstation

OS

Xubuntu 18.04 LTS ( Making it lightweight so apps can fully utilize the RAW power of the CPUs and Rams ) devil.gif

Worrying Points

As these Xeon processors are quite old , especially the v1 which are 7 years old . Not knowing that it can last more than 5 years before it becomes obsolete and I thought about that and came out with the build 3 but that puts alot of problems for me especially when i have budget constraints.

The builds

Build 1 - ( Single socket ) E5-2650V4 x 1 ( Rough Cost - approx USD 1528.28 )

  • Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2650V4 (Refurbished) [12 Cores 24 threads ,
    Hyper-V , Hyper-threads ]

  • Sapphire R9 370x 4GB GDDR5 (Refurbished )

  • Monitor ( I have a spare 24" dell )

Build 2 - ( dual sockets) E5-2680 x 2 ( Rough Cost - approx USD 1510.62)

  • Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2680 (Refurbished) [8 Cores 16 threads ,
    Hyper-V , Hyper-threads ] x 2

  • Supermicro X9DRL-iF (Refurbished ) (
    supports usb 2.0 only =( unless I install PCIE ( USB 3.0 ) card )

  • 16GB PC3 12800R DDR3 1600MHz 16G 4Rx4 REG ECC ( X 2 ) to get 32GB
    (Refurbished )

I don't have the any benchmark for anything above, would like the inputs and insights of all gurus out there especially on the pros and cons . Suggestions on builds are greatly appreciated.

Thank you
